Another month is in the books! A few highlights from the month of October include:
1) A bunch of new (and fantastic) employees
Wow. This month has possibly been the biggest since the origin of Teachable for new hires. We’re so happy to bring on,
- Peter Lemiszki - Front-End Developer
- Jon Uland - Marketing Operations Manager
- Eduardo Yi - Lead Content Marketer
- Katya Dreyer-Oren - Engineering Intern
- Jess Catorc - Partnerships Manager (Jess has been working with us for several months, but is now officially here full-time!)
(Pss! We’re still hiring. Come join the coolest team ever by checking out some of our openings here.)
2) Improving internal processes and workflows
For the month of October (and months to come) we’ve been working on improving internal processes and workflows to enhance communication between teams. For instance, we recently implemented the use of Trello between customer care and the engineering teams.
3) Gearing up for a big November + December
We have a lot of big things happening for the rest of 2016 such as the 2nd Annual Teachable Summit, a brand new Affiliate Program, iOS app, and more. Make sure to read until the end to see what’s coming up.
One of the major updates we made on October 1st, and has been a work in progress since, is adding European Value Added Tax (VAT) MOSS (Mini One Stop Shop) compliance.
VAT is an additional tax added onto the purchases of customers based in the EU. The tax varies in percentage from country to country and is entirely dependent on where the customer (the individual making the purchase) is based.
For students, VAT at checkout appears as follows:
Displayed in the example above, a student is completing payment to enroll in a course that is based in France - where the current VAT rate is 20%.
For all purchases made on Teachable payment gateways (all Free and Basic plans) we automatically handle VAT at checkout, filing and the remittance of funds to respective EU governments.
On the Teachable gateway, since it's a relationship between your students and Teachable, there is nothing additional you need to do to be 100% compliant with current VAT-MOSS rules. Moreover, for users on Free and Basic plans, there is no way to disable VAT collection for EU-based customers at checkout.
However, Professional and High Volume schools who’ve set up their custom payment gateways - both Stripe and PayPal - can disable VAT collection at checkout in the Teachable admin area under Settings > Taxes.
You can learn more about payment gateway options here.
We are still making improvements to the way we handle VAT internally, for school owners, and the way it displays for students (customers) both prior to and during checkout. In the weeks to come, we will be actively consulting with experts in the field to ensure full legal compliance. Rest assured, that everything will in our power is being done to provide school owners and their students with a convenient and comprehensive VAT-Moss solution, saving Teachable powered schools both time and energy.
Specifically, we are working on:
- Determining a way to display the VAT-inclusive course price before a student makes it to the checkout page. As of now, students are shown the VAT-exclusive price on the course sales page - with the VAT added appearing on the ensuing checkout form.
- Outlining the simplest way for instructors to handle filing VAT taxes if they’re not on the Teachable gateway.
- Finding a way to turn off VAT on a per-course basis, as courses with a live component, like a Q&A webinar, maybe be exempt from VAT-MOSS. We are still investigating legality in instances such as these.
Please stay tuned for updates! In the meantime, you can learn more about VAT on Teachable here.
Changelog now in Teachable Interface
We recently implemented a Teachable Changelog to communicate product improvements, changes, and fixes better. Now the Changelog is readily available from the Dashboard area inside your Teachable school.
Just click the megaphone icon, and a dropdown will appear showing the latest Teachable product improvements, fixes, and so forth from the Changelog.
Updated Course Checkout Flow
We modified the checkout flow to suggest the billing country where we believe the user is located first. For instance, customers in the US will see the United States at the top of the dropdown list.
Looking ahead, we plan on making further improvements to the course checkout flow, especially regarding conversion rate optimization. We want the checkout form students see to be the best it can be.
Knowledge Base Updates
We’ve been continually making improvements to the Teachable Knowledge Base.
Here are a few helpful articles we’ve added over the last month:
- Using Liquid on Teachable
- Bulk Importing Students
- Uploading Video Captions
- Turning Off Video Autoplay
We’ve also been adding how-to videos to select articles. Here are a few where we added videos recently:

TEACHABLE EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Meet Kyle Shigekuni
How long have you been working at Teachable?
About ten months now.
What do you do at Teachable?
I handle paid acquisition channels (like Google and Facebook), funnels, landing pages, data, and other fun stuff.
What’s the best thing about your experience working at Teachable?
It’s been an amazing experience working with such talented and driven people. Beyond that, it’s challenging. You never know what you’re going to be involved with! One day you’re in a creative brainstorm for an upcoming summit, the next day you’re devising a new branding video, and the following you’re lending a hand to the customer care team.
What’s an interesting Teachable school that you’ve come across?
UAV Coach is really cool. The site has a beautiful design, and it’s in awesome niche (drones).
What are you most excited about going forward?
I’m excited to see the release of some new features we’ve been working on, and where the industry is going. We’re lucky to be at the forefront of this massive paradigm shift in the understanding of what an “education” actually means, and it’s only going up from here.
WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT MONTH
2nd Annual Teachable Summit
After much success last year, we’re excited to bring you Teachable’s 2nd annual online summit. It’s happening from November 16 -22.
This jam-packed event will consist of 7 days of live training from 24 experts who’ve earned over one million dollars online. Even better? The summit is 100% free. Keep an eye out - sign ups are starting soon.
Teachable Affiliate Program
We’re in the process of rolling out an affiliate program for Teachable users that’ll be open to the public. If you’re interested in taking part, please fill out our interest form here.
Teachable Talks Podcast
The customer care team at Teachable is launching a podcast, answering top questions by you (school owners!) The show is going to be ten episodes spanning ten weeks. You’ll be able to tune in on Podbean and iTunes.
iOS App in the Works
Over the last few months we’ve been developing an iOS app. This is huge for us since accessing Teachable courses has only been native to the web. More to come on the Teachable mobile app that’ll let students access your courses on the go.
We’re Still Hiring!
Here are the roles that we’re currently hiring for:
- Product Designer
- Front-End Developer
